Makweti Safari Lodge is located in the 37,000 hectares Welgevonden Private Reserve in the Waterberg area of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Join us for a malaria-free safari - an easy 3-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Intimate and luxurious, Makweti Safari Lodge has five stone and thatch suites each providing indoor and outdoor showers, Victorian bathtubs, fireplaces, and private decks. Fine dining and an extensive selection of wines are available.

Evenings may bring elephant, lion, rhino, and other game; right to your doorstep at the waterhole. Safaris in this big 5 area are conducted in open safari vehicles with expert guides. The camp is unfenced, therefore expect the unexpected!

 

Welgevonden forms part of the greater, UNESCO-declared Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.  This biosphere is characterized by high-plateau geology, magnificent cloudscapes, crystalline streams, and an immense diversity of wild species.  (While perfect for indigenous plants and animals, the Waterberg’s soils are largely unsuitable for farming or forestry – hence the region has remained unspoiled across the centuries.)

 

The evocative wilderness area offers an exclusive, intimate experience of the African bush with only a limited number of guests having access to the reserve at any one time. No private vehicles are permitted, which ensures minimal human impact and the ultimate wilderness experience. There is also ancient and delicate Bushman rock art on Welgevonden.
Welgevonden is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big Five. There are rare and unusual species too, such as brown hyena, pangolin, aardwolf, and aardvark.

ACCOMMODATION
Five secluded suites, accommodating a maximum of 10 guests at any one time.

Of the 5 suites, 4 have private plunge pools and Salas where one can lounge or enjoy a private dinner during the summer months.

The luxurious suites are decorated with antique treasures and offer a respite from a busy world.

Each of the 5 suites has indoor and outdoor showers, Victorian bathtubs, log fires, private decks with sweeping views of the bushveld, mini-bars, intercom, hairdryers, torches, and fans.

The main lodge is built from natural rock with teak decks overhanging the dramatic Makweti Gorge. Rare African art, stylish furnishings, rich woods, leather, and woven textures create a romantic retreat.

 

The landscape is a natural home for Africa’s “Big Five” – elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard.  Makweti has no fences, so the Big Five, zebra, wildebeest, and a host of other iconic species wander freely through the Lodge’s surroundings.  Often, these wild “owners of the terrain” come for refreshment to the stream-fed waterhole just 80 yards from the open lounge and viewing deck.

ACCESS
NEAREST AIRPORT: Private airstrip in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

SELF DRIVE: Makweti Safari Lodge is located just 260 kilometers from Johannesburg – journey time is anticipated at 3 hours. The route is an easy drive, mostly on highways and good quality provincial roads. There are toll fees en route and these should be paid in cash.

TRANSFERS: Transfer services are available on request and include a meet and greet service at OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), or a hotel.

All passengers arriving by road are required to be at the Welgevonden Main Gate at 1 pm for a transfer to the camp. Transfers other than the scheduled transfers from/to the Welgevonden main gate (1 pm on arrival or 12 pm on departure) will be charged a private transfer rate.

GENERAL FACILITIES:
Indaba lounge: a private lounge and deck ideal for a relaxing afternoon. It overlooks the waterhole that is frequented by a wide variety of wildlife.
Main swimming pool, decks, and Tsala: this offers a secluded thatched retreat to cool off during the heat of the day.
Main Lodge: consists of the formal dining room, Zebra bar, wine cellar, library, dining, and viewing decks.
Boma: this is an outdoor dining area for romantic dinners under the African sky.
